Job Information

Description
REU: THE SUMMER INSTITUTE FOR NANO AND BIOMATERIALS RESEARCH

The Materials Science and Engineering Department at Carnegie Mellon University hosts a 10 week summer research program to expose undergraduates to cutting edge materials research.  The student research projects are highly interdisciplinary, allowing the REU students to interact with faculty, graduate and undergraduate students from a wide variety of disciplines.  The program provides students with the opportunity to gain valuable research experience by participating in research projects with engineering faculty and graduate students. Throughout the program, students will learn about ethical research techniques and be exposed to exciting materials research areas such as carbon nanotube bio-toxicity and photocatalytic materials for energy applications.  Students will also have the opportunity to interact with other participants through other activities such as career development workshops and field trips.  Informal meetings and social events with faculty and graduate students are also offered.  The goal of the CMU REU program is to provide the participants an interactive, encouraging and multi-level research experience that will help prepare them for graduate school.

We welcome applications from students majoring in chemistry, physics, or any engineering discipline.  Students from groups that are traditionally underrepresented in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) disciplines are strongly encouraged to apply.  In addition to the application form (obtained on the REU website), an official academic transcript and a letter of recommendation from a faculty member at their college or university is required from all applicants. Students must be US Citizens or Permanent Residents to be eligible.

REU students will spend ten weeks on Carnegie Mellon's campus during the summer - May 24 to July 30, 2010. Carnegie Mellon is located in Southwestern Pennsylvania, in the city of Pittsburgh.  Participants will receive a stipend, a double occupancy room in university housing, and additional funds for travel expenses.

Application Deadline: Complete application packets (transcript, application, letters of recommendation) will be considered as they arrive.  Applications must be postmarked by February 15, 2010
