The African University of Science and Technology in Abuja (AUST – Abuja) was established by the Nelson Mandela Institution (NMI) in 2007 as the first of a Pan-African Network of Institutes of Science and Technology and Centers of Excellence to be located across the African continent, www.AUST-abuja.org. AUST Abuja, accredited by the Nigerian Universities Commission in December 2007, intends to become a world class research-oriented institution with the ultimate goal of training and developing the next generation of talented African Scientists and Engineers who can profoundly impact the continent’s socio-economic development through excellence in science and technology research and development. AUST is an independent, not-for-profit university with a transparent governance system whose parent, NMI, is a private charity incorporated in the USA.
The AUST has developed extensive links with the African scientific diaspora and is able to count on a substantial pool of world class scientists and engineers teaching and researching in some of the best universities across the world. Strong partnerships have already been established with the African Institute of Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) in Cape Town (South Africa) and with the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT)and with the AIST affiliate center – the International Institute for Water and Environmental Engineering in Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso).
AUST will start its first academic year in July 2008 in Abuja, in a residential setting, and will offer initially two Post-graduates programs of 2-year duration leading to the AUST Post-graduate Diploma (PGD) after one year and a Master of Science degree (MSc) at the end of the second year. The PGD will be awarded to qualified students who will have passed the prescribed courses and the MSc after submission and approval of a thesis.
AUST intends to develop its own PhD program in the coming years, and also establish strong partnerships with other world class universities in Europe and North America, allowing our PhD students to do part of their studies in these foreign institutions.
